I agree with Michael Parenti's general argument. We have a capitalist economy dominated by concentrated corporate power. We have a political system that has strong, if not overwhelming, plutocratic foundations. As C. Wright Mills argued, they are a "power elite" who wield great influence over the media, and other institutional sectors of the society. This corporate/plutocratic system has at the center of the global political-economic system. The majority of people here and across the world, especially in "underdeveloped" countries are exploited, marginalized. Inequality and poverty increase. And so on. Parenti does not give up on "hope" for alternatives in the face of this capitalist system of power. However, it is here that he falls short. Where are the viable alternatives that threaten to undermine it? And we may not have generations to move ahead. The ecological cataclysms that are racing forward may not give us much time.
